Synopsis
Act I takes place in the moonlight and focuses on
the age-old story of boy meets girl. The fathers of the two, next-door
neighbors, privately want to further the romantic interests of their two
children. In public, however,
they tell the teenagers that they are forbidden from seeing each other.
Attempted abduction and an Errol-Flynn-like swordfight, from which the boy will
emerge the victor and impress the girl greatly. This occurs and the act
ends with, appropriately, Happy Ending.
Act II, in contrast, is set in sunlight. The boy
and girl begin to view each other in new‹and less pleasant‹ways. The boy decides
he needs to see the world before he commits to anything more permanent. The girl
shows no interest in holding him back and, in fact, begins to find El Gallo
rather attractive. Time passes and reality sets in for both. As the show ends,
the
two are back together again, but they are a little older and a great deal
wiser.
The Fantasticks contains some wonderfulmusic, ranging from the signature song of
El Gallo, "Try to Remember," to two lovely duets for the boy and girl, "Soon
It¹s Gonna Rain" and "They Were You," and two hilarious duets for
the fathers, "Never Say No" and "Plant a Radish."
